Brood X: Michael Phillip Cash review

Brood X: A Firsthand Account of the Great Cicada Invasion

Brood X is the 3rd book I have read by Michael Phillip Cash and each one has been remarkably different which I found really refreshing.

Brook X is a horror-genre novel set in the United States which starts in the midst of a deadly Cicada invasion. Billions of the insects have descended on the US and have cut off electric, water supplies, mobile phone service and the entire food supply.

The reader then gets to jump back in time to witness the build up to the invasion via a series of clips recorded by the two main characters Seth and Lara. Seth is a recently laid of worker who doesn’t believe that the Cicada invasion can really be that serious, whereas Lara, his heavily pregnant partner, is more concerned about the warnings on the television.

Once we have jumped back to the start of Seth’s video clips, the novel builds up the tension as the Cicada warnings get more urgent and the local population starts to get a lot more worried.

I really liked the novel approach of using Cicada as the horror ‘bug’. Cash does an excellent job of turning them into a bug to be afraid of and the novel has just the right amount of creepy bug moments in it.

Overall, Brood X was a a really enjoyable horror thriller.

I received a free copy of this story via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
