Bloodlines: Lynn Lipinski review

Bloodlines

Lynn Lipinski review

Rating: 3.5 Star

After being fired from his job at the zoo of Tulsa, recovering alcoholic Zane Clearwater drowns his sorrow with too much alcohol and cough syrup.

When he awakes, Zane has no memory of the previous evening and then learns that his mother has just been killed in a fire at their home.

Whilst still beginning to deal with the tragic loss of his mother and the new responsibility that he has for looking after his sister Lettie, Zane's memory blackout from the evening of the fire and his criminal record soon pique the interest of the police who start to view him as a primary suspect.

On the surface, Bloodlines seems like a really familiar plot but Lynn Lipinski does an excellent job in this novel of throwing in a lot of twists of turns.

We have the overriding question of who started the fire that killed Zane's Mum, which also has the twist that the main protagonist doesn't even know if he did it or not.

The novel also brings in a lot more mystery as Zane begins to investigate the fire. We find out that Zane's mother kept a lot of secrets from him, and that past events could well be influencing the current.

This was a fast paced page turner that I enjoyed.

It would have been a strong 4 rating but for the fact that I felt that some of the characters were under-developed, and there was also a lot of inner thought monologues from each character that detracted from the action.

Huge thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Bloodlines in exchange for an honest review.
